The story follows three troubled young men, friends since high school: Buddy Root [Robert Vaughn], Bob Miller [Roger Smith], and Stu Bradley [Tom Pittman]. Each man stands at a personal crossroads, and their intertwined paths push them toward a dangerous plan. Buddy Root is a college dropout and draft dodger who becomes entangled with a woman older than him, a relationship that adds strain and risk to his already fragile situation. He begins to dream of a fresh start far from the pressures that have built up around him, and the idea of stealing money to buy a boat and escape becomes a tempting, if perilous, escape hatch.

Bob Miller works at Dorr’s and is quietly trying to move his life forward, including a longing to marry a woman who seems to enjoy testing his affections and the comfort of conventional life. The woman in question, Tina Parner Bradley, is a waitress at a nearby coffee shop where the three friends often gather. Their shared flirtations and appetites for a good time with a wider circle of friends blur lines between romance, loyalty, and trouble. After a date, the trio hatches a plan to win Tina’s attention, but trouble intensifies when they attempt to slip into her home through a top-floor window. The risky move results in Tina falling and sustaining serious injuries, leaving Bob feeling a heavy sense of responsibility and a desperate wish to help cover her medical bills.

Stu Bradley, the third member, is a failed writer who has fibbed about a budding literary career in order to win the affection of a young woman and to impress her father. The lie is exposed, and Stu’s wife rejects him, underscoring the fragility of his ambitions and the cost of deceit. This personal setback compounds the tension among the friends and adds another layer of pressure as the plan they’ve plotted begins to unravel.

As the three move toward their shared break-in, Budd y’s impulsive decision-making comes to a head during the robbery itself. The plan spirals out of control when Buddy becomes overly wired and ends up killing the Dorr’s supermarket manager. The fallout is swift: Bob and Stu are swiftly apprehended by the police, while Buddy seizes a truck and bolts toward Mexico in a desperate bid for freedom. A tense pursuit follows, culminating in a dramatic moment when the truck’s brakes fail and the vehicle plunges over a cliff. The sequence of events tests loyalty, judgment, and the thin line between hope and ruin, leaving each man to confront the consequences of choices made in the heat of desperation.
