Vishwam is the youngest brother of a powerful and influential village jagirdar, a man who will go to any length to ensure his family’s welfare, even if it means bending the law for his own ends. Vishwam is shy and quiet, a contrast to the more assertive ambitions within his family, and his loyalty to kin becomes a quiet undercurrent in a community ruled by power and fear. The jagirdar’s circle includes his brothers, Anjaiya and Prasad, who regularly demand the favors and services of village women, illustrating a culture of coercion and entitlement that seizes control of the lives around them.

A new schoolmaster arrives in the village with his wife, Sushila, and their young son. The moment Vishwam lays eyes on Sushila, he cannot forget her, and the image of her lingers despite her clear lack of interest. The situation is delicate and fraught with tension, as the community’s power dynamics tilt toward the jagirdar’s family and their unspoken codes. The schoolmaster’s family settles into the village, attempting to build a peaceful home, while the unspoken desires and social pressures begin to twist the ordinary into something darker.

One night, during a quiet dinner at the schoolmaster’s home, a knock at the door sets off a chain of events: Anjaiya and Prasad forcibly abduct Sushila. Despite the presence of many witnesses, no one dares to intervene or stop the act, underscoring a chilling climate where power silences justice and fear paralyzes the crowd.

Back at the jagirdar’s residence, Sushila is subjected to brutal, repeated rape, a grave abuse of power that reflects the deeper rot within the village’s ruling class. The distraught schoolteacher, denied justice by every official—from the local police officer to the district collector—turns to the village temple’s old pujari, Pujari, for help. The pair of them makes a plan to mobilize the villagers, drawing on faith, fear, and a shared sense of injustice to galvanize a response to the oppression.

What follows is a dramatic, collective act of rebellion as the villagers rise up against their oppressors. They slaughter the men who have preyed upon them, and the violence spirals into a cathartic, if devastating, purge of the community’s abuses of power. In the end, the frenzy does not spare the innocent either: Rukmini and Sushila are killed, the latter a victim whose husband had been trying to rescue her but could not halt the torrent of violence. The narrative closes with a stark reminder of how fragile justice can be when power, fear, and tradition converge, leaving a village haunted by the consequences of its choices and the lives it could not protect.
