In 2044, the sprawling influence of Ambro, a dominant drug company, is rocked when computer hackers erase its research records. Before the culprit can be caught, the lead hacker injects himself with an experimental drug and vanishes, leaving behind a mystery that threads through time and motive. This future threat casts a long shadow over the events of twenty years earlier, when a tense chain of discoveries begins.
Frank Grieves, a former addict now serving as a police officer, stumbles upon a body at Ambro’s gleaming corporate headquarters. The key clue is elusive: his DNA scanner cannot identify the corpse, and etched on the body is the word “Morlock.” Grieves’s superiors, especially his commander Nolan, want him to abandon the case and focus on the shrinking street drug trade that has emerged in a world where narcotics look to be legalizing. Yet Grieves cannot let the riddle go; the word Morlock becomes a stubborn beacon guiding his pursuit of the truth.
As Grieves presses the investigation, Ambro intensifies its pressure to silence him. An unidentified drug is found in the body, but Ambro engineers a swift, decisive end to that line of inquiry by destroying the corpse. Undeterred, Grieves returns to the crime scene, where he encounters a young woman named Eva Gray, who appears to be marked for assassination by unseen forces. He rescues her, only to watch as her mysterious attacker seemingly disappears into thin air. Grieves attempts to shelter Gray, but his personal life complicates matters: his estranged wife Angie refuses to help, and Gray herself slips from custody when Grieves lets his guard down.
A crucial lead comes in the form of a scientist named Yuri Sidorov, suggested by the medical examiner Eddie Rankin, Grieves’s ally in what remains of the investigative effort. Grieves pays off Rankin’s debt to secure access to Sidorov, who promises to identify the unknown drug if given time. Yet Ambro’s security apparatus and Grieves’s own superiors repeatedly thwart that plan, forcing Grieves to push for results. When he finally confronts Sidorov, Gray is present and reveals a startling truth: she is a time-traveler from 2044, untraceable in Grieves’s current DNA database because she has not yet been born in his era. Grieves dismisses her story as the ravings of a junkie, but Gray remains steadfast.
Ambro launches a direct attack as Grieves transports Gray to safety. Reinforcements appear out of nowhere, disable Ambro’s security forces, and abduct Gray, injecting her with the same enigmatic drug. Then Ambro’s men kidnap Grieves’s young son in an attempt to force his cooperation. Grieves realizes the grim twist: the body he found earlier is the adult version of his nine-year-old son, Ben. The word Morlock, he discovers, is a reference to a book about time travel—the very book he once gave to Ben.
With Gray’s story gaining traction in his mind, Grieves seeks help from Rankin, who balks at further involvement. Ambro escalates the crisis by ordering Rankin killed and Sidorov kidnapped. Grieves manages to get his family to safety and confronts Nolan, who reveals a pragmatic, even chilling, plan but ultimately frees Grieves, acknowledging that Ambro will target him next as a potential threat. Nolan then proposes they escape together, but Grieves makes a different move: he compels one of Ambro’s scientists to inject him with the time-travel drug himself.
In a jarring leap through time, Grieves steps into 2044 and finds himself face to face with his now-grown son. He reaffirms the mission’s urgency, determined to protect the future Ben represents and the discovery that might render Ambro’s schemes moot. Returning to 2024, Grieves again discovers the body at Ambro’s headquarters, but this time the corpse is not Ben’s child—it is Grieves himself, a finding that reconfigures the entire mystery.
The story unfolds as a tense loop, where the line between present and future blurs and the stakes hinge on a single family’s fate and a drug that can bend time. The revelation reframes Grieves’s quest as a race against a corporate machine that would sacrifice people and time itself to secure its power. As he navigates alternating timelines and the shadowy forces that pull the strings, Grieves confronts the foundational question: can a man protect his son’s future when that future already aches with the past he cannot fully escape? The answer lies in the relentless pursuit of truth, the willingness to defy orders, and the delicate balance between personal sacrifice and the larger, time-bending truth at the heart of Ambro’s plans.
