During the summer of 1981 in Hutchinson, Kansas, two eight-year-old Little League teammates, Neil McCormick and Brian Lackey, begin a journey that will echo through their lives in the years that follow. The film unfolds with a quiet, compassionate gaze at childhood and memory, revealing hard truths beneath everyday small-town life.

Neil’s world is shaped by a mother who struggles with instability and by a devastating betrayal of trust: the Little League coach sexually abuses him, and the coach leaves town after that summer. This early wound twists Neil’s understanding of love and desire, shaping a path where he grows into an attraction to older men. The abuse is framed not as a monstrous event from a distance but as something deeply personal to him, coloring how he sees relationships and affection as he tries to navigate adolescence.

Brian, in contrast, appears to come from a home where attention and care are scarce. His recollections of the summer’s end are hazy, marked by a memory of rain and a five-hour blackout that ends with him waking in the crawl space of his house with a bloody nose. This blank interlude haunts him for years, and he begins a lifelong pattern of physical and psychic disturbances—nosebleeds, blackouts, bedwetting—that hint at something unresolved beneath the surface. He also experiences vivid dreams of a strange, bluish hand, dreams that recur with the unsettling suggestion that another boy, wearing the same Little League uniform, may be involved in his past in ways he cannot yet understand.

As the years slip by, Neil becomes entangled in prostitution in his teens, beginning at fifteen in 1987, and continuing into the early 1990s in New York City, where his world expands beyond Hutchinson but remains haunted by what happened back home. In the city, he forms a bond with Wendy Peterson, his best friend, who acts as a bridge to a different life. A powerful encounter with a dying client named Zeke—who requests only to be touched—leads Neil to reevaluate his work and his need for connection. After this fateful experience, he steps back from prostitution and accepts a job at a sandwich shop, with Wendy offering encouragement and support as he rebuilds his life.

The memory-charged thread of Brian’s life continues to pull him forward. He lives with the belief that the blue glow of a porch light and the strange, recurring dreams point to experiences beyond ordinary memory, including the possibility of alien abduction. A new acquaintance, Avalyn Friesen, shares a belief in similar experiences, and the two form a friendship. Yet when Avalyn makes sexual advances toward him, Brian panics and withdraws, choosing silence over speaking about what he has felt and seen.

One day, Brian happens upon a photograph of his Little League team, and in that image he recognizes the young Neil as the boy who appears in his own dreams. The emotional arc of the story converges during a Christmas visit to Hutchinson, when Neil returns home after a brutal rape and beating by a client. There, under the glow of a blue-tinted night, Neil and Brian reconnect for the first time in over a decade, the past painfully catching up to the present.

The two men eventually uncover the truth about what happened the summer they were eight: the coach had invited Brian to ride home after a rainout game, but instead brought them to his house, where the two boys were subjected to sexual acts, first by the coach and then between themselves. The memory unfolds in a way that reframes their childhoods, with Brian realizing that his prior memories were a coping mechanism rather than objective recollection. The night culminates in a tense, poignant moment: as they piece the night together, Brian’s memories crystallize, and Neil offers comfort to his old friend.

As the truth settles, the film closes on a moment of quiet reconciliation: the two men confront years of pain, and a Christmas carol fades into the distance as carolers sing “Silent Night.” The narrative leaves viewers with a balanced, restrained portrayal of trauma, memory, and the enduring bonds of friendship, inviting reflection on how early experiences shape who we become—and how honesty and compassion can begin to heal the deepest wounds.
