My Teacher, Mr. Kim 2003

Kim Bong-doo [Cha Seung-won] is a young teacher in a Seoul elementary school. He shows up late to class, earns daily scoldings from the principal, and spends evenings in room salons rather than preparing lesson plans. He also pressure-tests parents to bribe him for favorable treatment of their children. When his misdeeds finally come to light, he becomes the target of parent complaints and scrutiny at school.

He is soon reassigned to a rural branch school in Gangwon Province. The countryside presents a stark contrast to the city: cell phones are useless, and even buying cigarettes at the nearest corner store is out of the question. The school itself is tiny, serving only five students, and the locals offer vegetables and fruits rather than money. A grumpy old man named Old Choi [Byun Hee-bong] repeatedly pressures him, insisting that he teach the Korean alphabet.

In this isolated setting, driven by boredom and a longing for peace, Mr. Kim hatches a plan to transfer all of his students to Seoul, effectively aiming to close down the rural school. To lay the groundwork, he launches an after-school program designed to highlight each student’s unique talents and give them a reason to pursue a better education in the city. The approach is fraught with tension at first, but it gradually yields surprising results: the children begin to thrive, and the village starts to feel more hopeful. A sense of community strengthens as teachers and locals witness the kids’ growth, prompting school officials to rethink the idea of shuttering the campus.

Just as the plan seems to be gaining traction, a new obstacle emerges. A businessman arrives with a proposal to turn the school into a survival game site, triggering a fresh wave of temptation and testing Mr. Kim’s motivations. With money on the line, his resolve faces its ultimate test as he weighs the future of the students, the integrity of the village, and the true value of education.
