My Six Loves 1963

Janice Courtney Debbie Reynolds is a wildly successful Broadway actress whose star shines brightest on the stage but whose heavy schedule leaves her physically and emotionally drained. After a severe collapse, a doctor prescribes a long, quiet rest at her Connecticut home, a pause that sets the stage for a life far different from the bright lights of Manhattan.

On her property, Janice discovers a makeshift family living in a small shack: six children and a large dog, all left to fend for themselves. Moved by their vulnerability, she opens her home to them, offering them food, shelter, and a steady hand. She is supported by her devoted housekeeper, Ethel Eileen Heckart, and by the local minister, Rev. Jim Larkin Cliff Robertson. As she tends to the children, the idea of motherhood begins to feel real and rewarding, and she starts to imagine how life could be woven around a new, quieter domestic world while still retaining her sense of purpose and artistry.

Yet the pull of the stage remains strong. Producer Marty Bliss David Janssen persuades Janice to return to performance, prompting her to travel back to New York to begin a new play. At the same time, her connection with Rev. Jim Larkin deepens, introducing a romantic current that complicates her choices about career, love, and the family she has come to care for so deeply.

A sudden crisis tests everything. One of the children, Sonny, is hospitalized and then runs away. Jim tries to reach Janice, but the communications between the theater and the outside world become tangled, and Marty Bliss’s circle seems to push the situation aside. Jim arrives in person at the theatre, and Janice, overwhelmed by the turmoil, steps away from the production. When Sonny is eventually found, Janice realizes that the life she now wants is the one she can build with Jim—one that includes the children she has welcomed into her heart.
