Michael Pinto, Prateik Babbar, is a well-intentioned simpleton born and brought up in a small Goan village, where his world revolves around his doting mother and his growing passion for music. After his mother’s sudden death, he decides to become a priest to fulfill her last wish. Before attending school, he plans to visit his childhood friend Sameer, Arjun Mathur, in Mumbai. The film follows his gentle dreamset against the pulsing, uncertain rhythm of the city.

At a train station, Michael unknowingly disrupts a meeting between Maggie, Kalki Koechlin, an aspiring dancer who instantly attracts his attention, and a crook who intends to sell her to a pimp in Delhi. Michael is left alone at the apartment of Sameer, Arjun Mathur, and his wife Suhani (played by Shruti Seth) when they leave for a party. He accidentally locks himself out on the balcony and, in a panicked moment, slips through a nearby drainage pipe that dumps him into a bustling music shop. There, a local don, Makrand Deshpande, notices Michael’s natural affinity for rhythm and melody. The don runs a loosely organized criminal network that has recently landed in trouble, including a kidnapping case that has everyone guessing who is really in command. The don’s plan to safeguard his grip on power is threatened by his own assistant, Mac, Rajendranath Zutshi, who schemes to kill him to seize control. He twists two of the don’s loyal henchmen, Ajay and Vijay, into doing the dirty work.

Meanwhile, on the streets, Sameer and Suhani face their own set of relationship tensions, largely driven by Suhani’s demanding job and her close ties with Venky, her boss. Michael wanders through Mumbai through the night, rescuing a stray dog and even helping a gambler win a bout of luck to settle debts—only to have his wallet stolen soon after. In the midst of the city’s restless energy, he spots Maggie, Kalki Koechlin, perched atop a building. She seems poised to leap, but Michael reaches out in a moment of courage, pulling her back from the edge. Their rain-soaked reunion becomes a memory Michael cherishes as they talk about their lives. Maggie shares that she fled her home because her mother, herself a dancer, was strongly opposed to her pursuing the profession. Michael confides his own single dream: to be a good son. Before parting, Maggie gives him her phone number, a small thread of connection in the city’s vast, noisy tapestry.

A twist of fate brings Michael into contact with Reshma, Divya Dutta, a drunken former actress who is also the don’s girlfriend. After a minor accident with a drunken female driver, Reshma asks Michael for a ride home, inviting him into a house that buzzes with rumors and secrets. Inside, Reshma drunkenly hints at infidelity by the don, and the tension in the air thickens as the don arrives to declare his love for her. Michael daydreams about Maggie while strumming a guitar in a quiet corner of a backyard, feeling the pull between what he desires and what the night demands of him.

Back at the don’s party, Michael is drawn into a dramatic collision of loyalties and ambition. The don invites him onto the stage for a performance, a moment that also reunites him with Sameer and Suhani, along with other figures Michael met throughout his night. Maggie, who is performing at the party, is briefly reunited with Michael, but danger soon materializes. She is seized and confined inside a deep-freeze refrigerator, immovably stacked beside a dead body that Ajay and Vijay had been hiding all night, as she overhears Mac’s plan to assassinate the don. Faced with the weight of the revelation, Ajay and Vijay free Maggie and surrender to the police rather than carry out further violence.

In a tense turn, the don calls Michael on stage one last time, and the young musician rises to the moment with a performance that ends with a standing ovation from the crowd. The night’s chaos shifts toward reconciliation: Suhani confronts Venky and makes her stance clear, while Sameer and she begin to repair their strained bond. Michael’s confidence grows as he steps back into the roles of friend and hopeful son, and a grateful Maggie returns to the edge of the crowd. As the lights glow and the applause fades, Michael scans the audience and spots a smiling Maggie approaching. Their eyes meet, and the moment closes with a shared, quiet acknowledgment of the paths they’ve walked and the possibilities that lie ahead in a city that never truly sleeps.
