Kosovo, 1999. In a war-torn landscape where Serbs and Albanians clash, hatred has replaced tolerance, and towns are brutally divided along ethnic lines. Danica, Zrinka Cvitešić, is a young Serbian widow who lives with her two sons, Vlado, Andrija Nikčević, and Danilo, Miloš Mesarović, in a community dominated by Serbs near a town split by the River Ibar into Albanian and Serbian sections. The death of Danica’s husband at the hands of Albanians has left deep scars in the family. Little Danilo has not spoken a word since, and Vlado has become a hooky-playing loner who dreams of owning a bright blue bicycle. To fund such a dream, he dives into the Ibar every day to catch fish that the kiosk owner buys for a few coins, a small routine that hints at resilience amid chaos.
Despite the war, the people in the community strive to carry on with normal lives, clinging to routine, community ties, and fragile hope. But one day, Danica returns from town to find a seriously injured Kosovo-Albanian soldier, Ramiz, in her house. Ramiz, Mišel Matičević, is on the run from the Serbian militia, a fact that casts a heavy shadow over the shelter he has found. Demonstrating a choice that tests loyalties and humanity, Danica welcomes him in and begins to nurse him back to health, aware of the danger that his presence represents yet driven by a sense of compassion in the midst of fear.
As Ramiz recovers, the family and their neighbors become aware of the fragile balance between survival and moral responsibility in a town where suspicion runs as deep as the river that divides them. The narrative unfolds through quiet moments of everyday life—the shared chores, the wary glances, and the unspoken questions about who deserves mercy and who might pay a price for it. In this tense setting, bonds are tested, loyalties are weighed, and acts of care become quiet acts of resistance against the backdrop of a broader conflict.
Throughout, the film maintains a neutral, observant tone that emphasizes character, circumstance, and consequence. The story invites reflection on how ordinary people navigate fear, loss, and humanity when a single act of help can ripple through a shattered community, offering a glimmer of hope in a landscape scarred by decades of conflict.
