Murder in the Fleet 1935

On a U.S. Navy cruiser, Captain John Winslow Arthur Byron is informed that his ship will receive a cutting-edge firing control gear from World Electric, a development that promises to revolutionize naval warfare. The mysterious gear vanishes, only to be recovered as it’s being moved across the Mexican border, setting off a wave of secrecy and curiosity aboard the vessel.

Back on deck, the cloak-and-dagger atmosphere catches the attention of journalist Walter Drake J. Anthony Hughes, who begins to piece together the strange sequence of events. Lieutenant Tom Randolph [Robert Taylor] and Captain Winslow host visitors: Raymond Hatton as Al Duval from World Electric and Jean Hersholt as Victor Hanson from the Navy, both of whom come aboard while the gear is readied and installed. The arrival of these outsiders heightens the tension among the crew, who sense something is not quite right about the setup.

Meanwhile, Spud Burke [Nat Pendleton] finds himself caught between his sweetheart Toots Timmons [Una Merkel] and his old flame Betty Lansing [Jean Parker], adding a personal layer of drama to the unfolding events.

As the gear is hoisted into place, a disaster strikes: a cable breaks and the contraption is dropped. Later conclusions point to sabotage, casting suspicion over everyone connected to the project. The plot thickens when Al Duval is murdered during a gun salute, leaving the ship again unsettled and the investigators racing against time.

A second murder follows—the chief electrician—and the atmosphere grows even tenser. Captain Winslow hatches a plan to trap the killer, steering the investigation toward the powder magazine. There, Victor Hanson threateningly contemplates blowing up the ship, insisting that World Electric stole the idea and that revenge is his motive.

In the end, Hanson is captured and the danger passes as the gear is installed, its revolutionary capabilities finally ready to change naval warfare. The crew’s resolve is tested, truth surfaces, and the mission moves forward under a cloud of past deceit lifted by the ship’s sturdy leadership.
