Claude, Vince Edwards is a disaffected man who, in search of fast money to buy a $28,000 house, becomes a contract killer for a shadowy figure named Mr. Brink. After proving his precision by killing targets in a barber shop and a hospital for a Mr. Moon, Michael Granger whom he then kills at Brink’s behest, Claude is given a contract to kill a witness in a high-profile trial that starts in two weeks in Los Angeles.

At first Claude remains calm, spending the first days sightseeing to check if his handlers, George, Herschel Bernardi and Marc, Phillip Pine, are being followed. Claude becomes agitated when he discovers the witness is a woman, Billie Williams, Caprice Toriel who is closely guarded at her house. He believes women are harder to kill than men, because they are

“unpredictable”.

Billie Williams never leaves her tightly guarded residence, forcing Claude to improvise as he searches for a way to complete the assignment. After two attempts, Claude thinks he has killed her, but he later learns that he has actually killed a policewoman, and the police have covered it up to prevent further attempts on Billie’s life.

Out of ideas and convinced the contract is “jinxed,” Claude quits, only to discover that George and Marc have now been instructed to kill him. After a deadly confrontation, Claude kills the two men and finally breaches Billie’s home through a culvert, but he hesitates at the moment of strangling her. The police arrive; Claude attempts to escape via the culvert, but is killed in a shoot-out.

Claude is set apart from other hit men by his unwillingness to carry a gun and by his clinical, almost businesslike approach to murder. He treats each job with cold calculation, aiming for precision over impulse, a mindset that drives every lethal decision he makes.
