Muniyandi is a third-year undergraduate zoology student and the son of Muthumani, who runs the college canteen. His everyday life is woven through the social web of his campus, where tradition and caste rules quietly steer who fits in, who moves ahead, and who loses out. One day he crosses paths with Madhumitha, the demure daughter of the powerful local figure Ramaiyya, a man who prioritizes caste above all else. The encounter sets off a chain of moments as Madhu’s charm filters through Muni’s circle of friends, including Sorimuthu Ayyanar, a colorful part-time witch doctor who also serves as the college peon, complete with bells and saffron regalia. Yet, even as Madhu flirts with Muni’s friends, she ends up forming a connection with him first.
The story moves through a tinderbox of caste-dominated college elections, where love and loyalty collide with communal pressures. As Muni and Madhumitha fall in love, the political climate grows tense. When Madhu’s marriage is arranged, she abruptly withdraws and declares that she was never in love with Muni in the first place. The moment fuels Muni’s fury: he lashes out, slapping her with his slippers, and he retaliates by setting fire to her father’s coconut grove. The violence marks a turning point, even as the truth behind his brother’s death begins to surface. Muni learns that his brother was killed while trying to help a friend who loved someone from a different caste, a revelation that reframes his own sense of justice and duty.
Driven to challenge the caste games that govern their campus, Muni enters the college elections with the aim of opposing Madhu’s stance. On the day of the nomination, he discovers that Madhu’s feelings for him were real, but she had retreated due to her father’s pleas to save his life. With resolve, Muni convinces the students to halt the election and put an end to the caste-driven games that have polluted the college’s politics. The plot thickens as Ramaiyya and other caste leaders become targets of a violent plan orchestrated by Raju—a friend of Muni’s late brother and the old girl’s former lover. Muni intervenes to thwart this deadly path, preventing further bloodshed.
In the end, after his father’s blessing, Muni goes back to the temple’s edge where Madhumitha waits, and the couple are finally united. The narrative threads together love, legacy, and a community’s struggle with rigid social rules, all while portraying a young man’s growth from reactive anger to a tempered, hopeful resolution.
