It all begins on a single night when a girl named Pearl (Emily Meade) is invited to the house of another girl. Pearl proves to be a Nightwalker, a vampire who cannot be harmed by daylight while in human form. After Pearl is bitten and stabs the hostess in the heart, she starts to transform as the Nightwalker Queen and her minions present her with a captive human as her first meal.
Sometime later, a college girl named Leah (Leila George) is working on a play directed by James Franco and befriends Pearl, eventually falling in love with her, much to the dismay of her mother Julie (Tori Spelling). Leah learns that Pearl is a Nightwalker. Pearl’s nightwalker faction preys on abusive men and forcibly inducts women into the group by biting them and then not feeding on them.
The Nightwalker Queen has her sights set on Leah as the next member and wants Pearl to bite her, threatening to bite Pearl herself if Pearl doesn’t comply. There is a sexual undertone to biting, discussed in a thematic English class’ look at vampire novels like Dracula and Twilight, portraying the threat as one of rape.
Julie tries to get Leah involved with a man named Bob Segal, who is attracted to Leah. Bob feels entitled to Leah as a longtime friend and grows upset when Leah reveals her attraction to women. He teams up with Julie to expose Pearl as a bad person to win Leah’s heart. When that fails, he spikes Pearl’s drink with a date-rape drug and attempts to assault her.
The Nightwalkers attack him and begin to feed, but the interruption allows him to transform into a Nightwalker himself.
Now with enhanced abilities, Bob leads the Nightwalkers in an assault on Leah, disrupting the play. Julie follows them to the graveyard and is killed by Bob while trying to rescue Leah. Leah exacts vengeance by bludgeoning Bob to apparent death. Pearl seems to kill the other Nightwalkers by ripping the throat of one and blinding another. After escaping, Pearl tells Leah she can protect her.
Leah, grieving, asks Pearl to turn her into a Nightwalker so they can be together for eternity. Pearl agrees, and Leah becomes a Nightwalker.
One year later, the Nightwalker gang remains active and scarred, now heavily influenced by Bob as they slip into a Halloween party.
