The film portrays the final years of Jose Maria Morelos y Pavon, a key leader in Mexico's fight for independence between 1812 and 1815. Following a successful evasion of Calleja's blockade in Cuautla and the capture of Oaxaca, Morelos rallied his forces and aimed to seize the strategically important port of Acapulco, despite growing pressure from royalist troops. The story explores his complex relationships with his officers, his attempts to establish independent governing structures, and the creation of a disciplined army to challenge the royalists. It highlights the contrasting aspects of this Mexican hero's character: his determination and his inner conflicts.
