Montevideo, God Bless You! 2010

In 1930 Belgrade, Yugoslavia, eleven passionate, mostly anonymous but incredibly talented soccer players begin a long, winding journey from the cobblestone streets of impoverished Belgrade neighborhoods to the formation of the national team that would aim for the very first World Cup in faraway Uruguay. Named after the city that hosted the inaugural World Cup, this film—an adaptation of Vladimir Stanković’s best-selling book—centers on the evolving relationship between two standout young talents: Tirke, Miloš Biković a natural prodigy from the streets, and Moša, Petar Strugar a charismatic playboy who has already tasted fame.

The two players become friends when they are thrown together on the front line of the dominant local club, BSK Belgrade. As the club wrestles with financial strains and the challenge of keeping the squad afloat, the opportunity arises to assemble a national team. Yet team harmony is tested when Tirke and Moša clash over matters of the heart. Rosa, Danina Jeftić, a voluptuous, small-town girl who adores Tirke, becomes a focal point, while her soccer-mad uncle schemes to set her up with Moša. Meanwhile, Valerija, Nina Janković, a wealthy, fun-loving flapper, seduces Moša and delights in stirring tension between the two friends.

What begins as personal rivalry gradually gives way to a shared, larger dream: to prove themselves on the world stage in Montevideo. The narrative tracks how doubt about their personal and professional lives gives way to perseverance, loyalty, and a deep love for the game. It is a story about friendship, enthusiasm, persistence, and the abiding passion that drives these young players toward a distant, daunting, but thrilling goal.
