During a storm in rural Vermont, midwife Sibyl Danforth assists a homebirth with the father and an assistant. Complications make a hospital necessary, but a dead phone line and icy roads keep them trapped. After the mother dies, Sibyl performs an emergency C‑section, saving the baby.
