Steve Hall (James Laurie) is a young sprintcar driver from Toowoomba who has returned home to Sydney to team up with his dad Ted and his business partner Tomas (Max Cullen) in their towing and panel-beating business, “T&T Towing,” as well as to stand alongside his dad who is also a Sprintcar driver at the local speedway. He arrives to find his father mysteriously missing and Tomas under pressure to join an illegal chop-shop ring.
A shadowy criminal network known as the midnite spares moves cars between states, and Tomas’s mount to resist their pull becomes a dangerous test of loyalty. In a brutal confrontation, Tomas is set up and suffers a broken arm when a tyre iron is used to send a message. The thieves are led by a bent police detective, Howard (Tony Barry), with a crooked alliance that includes Vincent (John Clayton) and Sidebottom (Graeme Blundell). Steve and Tomas rally a small, rough-edged team—Wimpy (Bruce Spence) and Rabbit (David Argue)—to pursue the criminals and try to bring them to justice. Tomas’s hard-won maxim guides them: > Don’t get angry son, get even.
Alongside the pursuit, Steve meets Ruth Mintos (Gia Carides) and the romance slowly blooms against the backdrop of danger and uncertainty. The couple must win over Ruth’s traditional family, including her mother Maria Mintos (Tessa Mallos) and her Uncle Harry (Terry Camilleri), who are wary of their alliance and the risks that accompany it. The stakes deepen as Steve seeks to prove himself behind the wheel at Parramatta City Raceway, testing his speed against a field of Sydney and Australian drivers and proving, through skill and nerve, that he can stand up to the pressures bearing down on him.
The film intertwines street-level crime with high-octane racing, blending a love story with a quest for justice. It threads together personal loyalty, family obligations, and the lure of revenge, all set against the gritty underbelly of a racing community that moves as fast as the cars themselves. The narrative keeps a steady, neutral lens on the characters’ aims and the consequences of their choices, building toward a driving climax that remains faithful to the core of the original plot while offering a fresh, readable retelling. Bold ambitions collide with stubborn resolve as Steve, Tomas, Ruth, and their allies push back against a network that will stop at nothing to maintain its grip on the city’s wheels and its shadows.
