In Belfast during The Troubles, two young boys—Mickybo John Joe McNeill and Jonjo Niall Wright—from opposite sides of the sectarian divide form an unlikely friendship. They are obsessed with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and dream of stealing from banks and emigrating to Australia.

From different backgrounds, the boys bond quickly as they imitate the film’s swagger, stepping into the outlaws’ personas in their everyday lives. After watching the movie together, they imagine a future where they can escape the confines of their city and the constant tensions around them, pursuing the lure of the film’s carefree mythos.

Believing they will be blamed for an old man’s death, they decide to go “on the run” toward the imagined land of Australia. Their journey toward the ferry becomes a string of misadventures: a pretend bank robbery, riding horses and ponies, a blaze in a stable, and a close call with a police car. When they are recaptured, they discover they have, in fact, already crossed the Irish border.

Back home, a tragedy reshapes their world: one of the boys’ fathers is killed in a sectarian shooting, driving a wedge between the friends and testing the resilience of their bond. In the closing stretch, the film pivots to the future, showing how the past lingers in memory even as the present moves on.

Thirty years later, adult Mickybo Owen O’Neill opens a large envelope from Jonjo Niall Wright. Inside is the toy sheriff’s star and a photograph of Jonjo with his family living in Australia, a quiet reminder of a shared youth and the different paths time can carve for two boys who once dreamed of distant shores.
