Fed up with the lack of recognition despite his success as a writer of horror-themed soft porn, Abhimanyu Roy (Ayushmann Khurrana) returns to his hometown, Kolkata. His parents, Aparajita Auddy (Aparajita Adhya) and Rajatabha Dutta, trick Abhi into believing they are getting divorced, but they are genuinely concerned about the influence of a girl named Bindu Shankarnarayanan (Parineeti Chopra), who has captivated his thoughts. Determined to create something more profound, Abhi embarks on writing a nostalgic love story that has been three years in the making—his writer’s block personified by Bindu.
How does one encapsulate the essence of such a vibrant and unpredictable person like Bindu within the confines of a book? As Abhi reflects, “You know when a song comes on and you just have to dance? Bindu was that song. That silly infectious joyful tune you couldn’t get out of your head - even if you wanted to.” To navigate this, Abhi revisits his memories, triggered by an old mixtape filled with their favorite songs, leading him on a journey through his past. As he reminisces, Abhi discovers the depth of his roots, reconnecting with his family and allowing his novel to unfold organically.
As it happens, Bindu once resided next door to Abhi in Bangalore, with dreams of becoming a singer. Childhood friends, they shared countless adventures, engaging in playful pranks and innocent mischief. However, as life took its toll, Bindu faced tragedy with her mother’s untimely death in a car accident, leading her to blame her father and flee to Australia. Meanwhile, Abhi pursued a career in banking after moving to Mumbai.
Their paths converge again when Abhi learns that Bindu is returning to Kolkata for her wedding, yet true to her rebellious spirit, she escapes her engagement. Their friendship perseveres through time until a chance encounter in Goa reignites their connection. Not only is Bindu attempting to chase her aspirations in Mumbai, but she is also engaged. As circumstances turn tumultuous, Abhi sacrifices his own romantic pursuits to support Bindu through a difficult breakup.
Realizing his love for her, Abhi proposes, and she accepts, but when Bindu’s solo album flops and plunges her into another bout of despair, she ultimately rejects his romantic advances. She declares her inability to share his vision of a conventional life. This pivotal moment prompts Abhi to transform his existence; he abandons his stable banking job to pursue writing, ultimately leading him into the realm of horror-themed literature.
As his writing career takes off, he receives a call from Bindu, revealing she is about to marry someone else. In the present, Abhi learns that Bindu’s father is selling their old bungalow. He visits Bindu’s room one last time, only to find a little girl sitting where he first met Bindu—the realization hits that she is Bindu’s daughter. He offers Bindu a copy of his complete novel, which concludes with a narrative where he bravely fights for her love, resulting in a kiss and a life together. However, Bindu gently reminds him that this story belongs to him, and he has the liberty to weave it in any manner he wishes. Though they part ways, they cherish their final moments together, forever changed by the love they shared.
