Suraj, Rajesh Khanna is a rising singer who is presented with a tanpura by his fiancée’s father, and soon afterward begins to hear a haunting song that lingers in the night. One stormy evening, while heading to a stage show, he seeks shelter in a small, unknown motel. There, he meets a woman named Ratna, Hema Malini, whose voice seems to echo the very tune that haunts him. That night, he glimpses Ratna singing the same melody and walking toward a dilapidated palace. Trusting a pull he cannot quite explain, Suraj follows her into the haveli and calls out her name. An old keeper of the palace explains that Ratna died more than 1000 years ago and that locals believe her spirit still haunts the place.

As Suraj wanders the shadowed halls, a portrait of Ratna triggers memories of a past life in which he was Prakash, the chief singer of a royal court, and Ratna was the court dancer he loved. They cannot marry: Prakash is betrothed to another, and Ratna is destined to become the royal courtesan. The lovers decide to elope, but they are killed on their way, and they part with a vow to meet again.

Returning to the present, Suraj is pulled deeper into the mystery when he encounters a gypsy girl, Jhumri, Hema Malini, whom he believes is Ratna’s reincarnation. His newfound connection helps Jhumri recall memories of her past life and her deep love for Prakash. The two declare an enduring love that seems to defy time itself. This revelation infuriates Suraj’s fiancée, Rita Malhotra, Asha Sachdev, and Popatlal, a schemer and rival played by Prem Chopra(/actor/prem-chopra), who is eager to pursue Jhumri. Popatlal steals Ratna’s portrait and fans the flames of conflict, turning the gypsies against Suraj and sparking a tense showdown between the singer and the nomadic troupe.

Amid growing danger and mounting opposition, Suraj and Jhumri navigate a web of jealous rivals, eerie memories, and the blurred lines between past and present. The climax centers on whether their love can endure the weight of history and present-day threats, as they confront the obstacles arrayed against them and seek to consummate their bond once more. Through courage, persistence, and a touch of the supernatural, the pair strive to forge a future that honors their centuries-old vow.
