New York City in the 1930s provides the bustling backdrop as the Morning Post’s court room becomes the stage for a comic twist of fate. The court reporter Frank Black gets drunk at work, and his colleagues persuade the naive and unsuccessful newspaper poet Gil Taylor to take over the court report. The case centers on an indigent girl accused of vagrancy, a charge that could land her in prison.

Gil Taylor testifies on her behalf, showing pity for the attractive girl and declaring that he is her fiancé, but the judge remains skeptical and demands proof. To settle the doubt, the judge arranges for the two to be married on the spot, insisting that a real marriage would establish they are a couple. The girl, who later goes by the name Ann Garden, and Gil, both strangers to one another, reluctantly agree to the arrangement.

The next day, every newspaper splashes the sensational wedding—except the Morning Post, because Gil forgot to file the report in his excitement. The editor Manning fires him, along with two colleagues who stood by him, shaking up the newsroom and setting off a chain of consequences that ripple through the entire paper.

Now a married man, Gil shares his life with a wife who calls herself Ann but refuses to reveal her true identity. A misunderstanding then leads the trio of ex-journalists to believe that his wife is the abducted niece of oil magnate Mr. Jackson. The mistaken belief fuels a string of humorous situations and close calls as the group navigates pride, reputation, and the unexpected turn their lives have taken.

After a series of amusing misadventures, Gil manages to win back his job, and the relationship between him and Ann deepens into genuine affection. The story balances lighthearted comedy with the backstage tensions of a bustling newsroom, offering a portrait of ambition, romance, and the unpredictable nature of reporting in a big city.
