Love Punjab 2016

Pargat Amrinder Gill and Jessica Sargun Mehta are a couple navigating a painful separation while raising their son, Manveer Manvir Johal, who confronts racism and discrimination at school. His distress deepens into depression, and on the guidance of a doctor, the family heads to Punjab to reconnect with their roots, culture, and the village where their story began. Jessica persuades her father-in-law, Brar Sarpanch Yograj Singh, to show Manveer that Punjab can offer strength, belonging, and hope—an invitation to see a different life beyond Canada.

The trio spends fifteen days in Punjab, during which they temporarily present a joyful, unified front to Brar Sarpanch and the world, even though the divorce remains undisclosed to the elders. Away from the pressures of work and the daily grind, the old spark between Pargat and Jessica flickers back to life, though they neither acknowledge nor voice what they feel. Back home, Manveer begins to recover his buoyancy and optimism, finding joy in moments that had been dimmed by worry.

Yet the separation resurfaces with sharper consequences. After they return to Canada, Pargat and Jessica proceed with the divorce, while Jessica’s engagement to her long-time friend Zora looms on the horizon. Amid the wedding plans, Pargat realizes he cannot live without Jessica. At the engagement ceremony, their son Manveer Manvir Johal ironically tests the moment by stealing the ring but returning it, a small act that exposes the unspoken truth. Pargat fabricates a phone call from his father to obscure the ongoing divorce, and Jessica discovers the ruse, sensing that the two of them still have not properly confronted their situation.

A tense confrontation follows. Jessica, upset by the deception, leaves the engagement and drives to their home, where a quiet but charged exchange unfolds. Pargat finally confesses his enduring love, and the two reconcile in a moment of renewed commitment. Fast forward about a year, and the couple welcomes a baby girl, choosing to dream again about Punjab and the life that first drew them together. The story closes on a hopeful note: a phone call from Pargat’s parents announces they’re coming to visit, signaling a future that blends family, roots, and a second chance at happiness.
