High school senior Bridger and his mother Helen Jenkins flee Missouri with only $197 to their names, escaping an abusive stepfather and husband, and set out toward the West Coast to catch a glimpse of the ocean. Their desperate journey is marked by a stubborn hope and quiet resilience as they chase a new life beyond the familiar landscapes they’re leaving behind.

When their truck finally breaks down, they find themselves stranded in the small town of Greenville, Utah. There, a sympathetic local mechanic, Will Simms, offers them temporary lodging and a lifeline they so desperately need. The town’s everyday rhythms begin to feel almost welcoming, even as storms from the past threaten to surge back at any moment. Will’s daughter, Clover, is a shy presence in this rough-and-tumble world, carrying a deep, private pain—the left cheek bears a scar, a reminder of a past incident where a gun went astray when Clover’s friends were drinking. The trauma of that night lingers, shaping how she moves through high school and how she dares to hope for something gentler than what she’s known.

Bridger also bears a mark of his own: a chest scar from a childhood heart transplant. Despite this fragile heart and the limits it imposes, he and Clover find in each other a steady allyship that helps them stand up to the school bully, Bo Chinsley. Bo, along with another football player who was involved in Clover’s accident, loom large over their days, while one of Clover’s peers who understands the truth about the incident remains sympathetic—yet Bo’s anger still burns bright when her testimony lands him in trouble. Apathy from school authorities makes the fight feel uphill, but the wood-shop teacher offers a rare, protective presence, trying to shield Bridger whenever he can. Bridger’s condition keeps him from retaliation, adding a quiet gravity to every moment.

As their senior year unfolds, Bridger and Clover persevere through the social turbulence and manage to graduate together, their relationship becoming a quiet testament to endurance and care. On the night of graduation, Bo corners Bridger in a restroom, and when Bridger finally responds with a punch, Bo’s accomplices pin him down and brutally beat him, targeting his chest and leading to a life-threatening cardiac arrest. The wood-shop teacher, tipped off to the planned attack, interrupts just in time and an ambulance takes Bridger away. At the hospital, Bridger lingers in a coma while Clover reads poetry aloud, and he slowly awakens enough to finish the last line of the stanza she began and asks her to marry him. The moment is deeply joyful, even as Clover’s father worries about the risks their union might pose to her, and she reassures him that their love can sustain them.

They marry in a private ceremony, and together they chase Bridger’s dream of seeing the Pacific Ocean. They travel toward California, where their bond seems to promise a new life that might heal some of the old wounds. Yet fate intervenes: the morning after their wedding night, Bridger’s heart gives out, and Clover discovers him on the beach, leaving their families to face heartbreak. The film closes with a hopeful, poignant image of Clover pushing their child on a swing, a small but enduring sign of life and love moving forward despite the losses endured.
