Love in a Puff 2010

Since 2007, the Hong Kong government banned smoking in all indoor areas, pushing smokers from nearby buildings to congregate for cigarette breaks during office hours at trash bins with ashtrays near their workplaces. This ritual gradually evolves into a small, friendly community where regulars exchange light chatter and dirty jokes the way friends do at a pot dinner, giving rise to what locals call the Hot Pot Pack.

Jimmy, an advertising executive, Shawn Yue Man-Lok meets and befriends Cherie, Miriam Yeung, a cosmetic salesgirl, during one of these Hot Pot Pack sessions, coming shortly after Jimmy ends a breakup with a girlfriend who cheated on him. Over the next several days, Cherie flirts with him during cigarette breaks, and their relationship deepens through text messages and late-night excursions. This growing closeness helps spark Cherie’s decision to end her live-in relationship.

On the night Cherie breaks up with her boyfriend, the pair attempt a one-night stand at a love motel, but the encounter falters and doesn’t go as planned. In the days that follow, Cherie suggests switching to the same telecom provider as Jimmy to save money, a move that unsettles him and stirs doubts about his level of commitment to the relationship. What follows is a tense, evolving conversation that pushes them to reevaluate what they really mean to each other.
