The story unfolds in the rough-and-tumble era of the 1890s, in a bustling San Francisco where courage and coincidence collide. George Ball, Lou Costello and Tom Watson, Bud Abbott are steadfast firemen who rush to pull a desperate man from the brink of despair. They rescue ‘Nugget’ Joe McDermott, Tom Ewell from a drowning attempt sparked by heartbreak, as his girlfriend, Rosette, Mitzi Green, has lost faith in him. The trio’s act of mercy sets off a chain of loyalties, doubts, and peril that threads through the rest of the film.
