Nicole Lauker is left reeling when the police inform her that the fishing trip she and her husband planned took a fatal turn: a bomb destroyed the boat, and Evan Lauker is dead. Confronting him at his home, Nicole learns the truth behind his actions: he is an undercover agent for the State Department, and his bigamy, as well as the two faked deaths, were part of a larger, sanctioned scheme to secure a $5 million deal with criminals, carried out under the direction of his handler. The revelation shakes Nicole, yet she remains determined to see the truth through.

Though Evan professes affection and asks Nicole to run away with him to the Caribbean, she refuses to abandon the life she has built.
