Life Begins Anew 1945

Paolo Martini, Fosco Giachetti, a chemist and Italian veteran, returns home to Rome after years spent in a British POW camp during the Second World War. He finds his son Sandro grown in his absence, and his wife Patrizia Martini, Alida Valli, who has faced considerable hardship while he was away. The couple’s quiet new neighbor, the Professor, Eduardo De Filippo, who lost his wife and daughter in the bombings of Napoli, becomes a steady, thoughtful presence as they all try to reclaim their lives.

After readjusting to life back in peacetime Rome, Paolo is shaken when Patrizia suddenly disappears. He and the Professor embark on a city-wide search, wandering through familiar streets and unfamiliar corners of the capital, until they locate her in custody at a police station, where she has been accused of murder.

Patrizia admits a painful truth from the war years: she prostituted herself to pay for medicine to keep Sandro alive. Paolo, initially outraged, pushes her away and even contemplates confessing to the murder to spare her, despite the investigator’s counsel not to. The revelation tests the foundations of their marriage and shakes Paolo’s sense of duty, loyalty, and love.

The investigation unfolds with quiet, morally fraught tension as Paolo struggles to reconcile his burgeoning grief with a desire for a clean break, while Patrizia remains determined to face the consequences of her past. In the end, Patrizia is acquitted, but the emotional aftermath leaves Paolo unsure of his future with her and with Sandro.

It is the Professor who offers a pivotal, heartfelt perspective in a closing moment, urging Paolo to weigh mercy, forgiveness, and the possibility of rebuilding a life together.
