Demobbed soldier Gordon Laid returns from WWII and meets Maxine Lupercal aboard the same ship heading back to England. Because Gordon looks exactly like a member of the traveling acting troupe, he is mistaken for the performer and becomes entangled in a series of murders and an international espionage scheme centered on a peculiar cigarette lighter that interferes with electricity. The farcical climax erupts onstage as Gordon, his double, the spies and the police converge in a frantic scramble to retrieve the missing lighter.
