From the start, the Le Mans race tests nerves and strategy. The Mercedes squad faces early trouble when Fangio’s car stalls at the very beginning, forcing Levegh into the primary role. Fitch watches as Levegh pushes to close the gap with the leading Jaguar driven by Mike Hawthorn, while Fangio struggles to regain momentum for his team. As the scene darkens with the disaster, Fitch witnesses the carnage and Neubauer’s cool, calculated stance comes under pressure. Neubauer tells him that Moss is moving up, fueling a tense debate about the right course of action. Fitch challenges Neubauer’s apparent cold‑heartedness, urging him to withdraw Moss’s car, a move Neubauer is reluctant to make in the heat of the moment.

In the early hours of the morning, as Moss finally takes the lead, Neubauer makes the fateful decision to pull Mercedes‑Benz from the race, declaring, “We are racing drivers, we’re not monsters.”

The film closes with intertitles that outline the aftermath: Mercedes‑Benz were the only team to withdraw and did not return to motorsports for 43 years; Fitch devoted himself to road safety; and the catastrophe left about 80 dead, marking the crash as the deadliest accident in motorsports history.
