Layla M., Nora el Koussour is a young Dutch-Moroccan woman raised in Amsterdam, where she confronts everyday Islamophobia and racism on the streets and at school. While her mother and father are happily assimilated into Dutch culture, Layla grows restless and begins to drift toward Islamic fundamentalism. She starts to watch and circulate short films she finds online about the oppression of Muslims in Syria and Gaza, and she decides to make a film of her own to tell a story she feels forgotten. This choice immediately unsettles her parents and marks the start of a personal and ideological clash at home.

When a ban on wearing burqas is enacted, Layla doubles down on her decision to wear one, a move that deepens the rift with friends at school, including her best friend Meryem. After she and her brother Younes are arrested at a football match, tension explodes within the family. She finds herself in sharp disagreement with her father over how to interpret the Quran, and she is also disappointed by her brother’s decision to shave his beard, symbols that reflect diverging paths within the family.

Layla’s world expands and becomes more dangerous when she falls for a young radical named Abdel, Ilias Addab, who speaks to her about their shared political beliefs through late-night Skype conversations. She chooses to marry him in secret, a decision that propels them toward a jihadist training camp in Belgium. The couple narrowly avoids arrest by the authorities before relocating together to Amman, the capital of Jordan.

Living abroad exposes Layla to a culture markedly different from the Netherlands, where she finds herself navigating a patriarchal environment that excludes her from Abdel’s meetings with other men. Her sense of equality, once part of her Dutch upbringing, clashes with the restrictions she encounters abroad. As the reality of extremism becomes more apparent, she begins to question its ideology and grows increasingly uneasy with the life she has chosen. The film culminates with her return home and an interrogation by the Dutch intelligence service (AIVD), a moment dramatized through the presence of an Steef Cuijpers AIVD agent.

The Belgian camp sequences introduce the group dynamics among the trainees, depicted through the performances of actors including Zouhair Ait Aadi, Miraj de Groof, Kerem Demirci, Juju Habip, Batouz Nassaj, and Granit Nici.
