Laxdale Hall 1953

In a remote Highland village of Laxdale, tucked near the Isle of Skye at Applecross, a small group of car owners refuse to pay Road Fund taxes to protest the state of the road that serves them. A series of summonses sent out via the local police mysteriously disappear, prompting the government to send a delegation to investigate. It is led by Samuel Pettigrew, Raymond Huntley, a pompous politician and industrialist whose mother was born in Laxdale. He is accompanied by Sebastian Shaw as Hugh Marvell, M.P., and Fulton Mackay as Andrew Flett from the Scottish Office.

Pettigrew presents plans to abandon the village and set up a New Town, Brumley Dumps, 100 miles away. But the villagers remain unconvinced, and their resistance is leavened with personal stories and quiet humor. Flett, a former teacher, begins Romancing the local schoolteacher, while Marvell spends his time with the daughter of the laird, Kathleen Ryan as Catriona Matheson, a young woman with ties to the land and its people.

The locals perceive the situation through their own lens. In the middle of torrential rain, a local poacher chats casually with the undertaker, saying, > och, there’s a bit of mist on the hill. The hearse is even pressed into service to transport his poached stag. Later, in the downpour, they mount an open-air production of Macbeth, a bold communal act that is abruptly halted when news arrives that Glasgow poachers have entered the estate; only local poachers are tolerated.

A confrontation unfolds as the locals ambush the outsiders, and the police move in to arrest them. By the time the delegation is ready to leave, Pettigrew has absorbed the villagers’ point of view and recognizes that they must have a new road instead of being left to abandon their community. The story unfolds with a mix of rural resilience, political maneuvering, and small-town solidarity, highlighting how a tight-knit place can influence policy when its people insist on being heard.
