Kev and his young son Chook traverse the Australian outback, living on the edge as they steal cars, rob for cash, and shoplift for food and beer. Each night, they sleep in a different place—sometimes with friends, sometimes out in the vast, empty plains, or wherever they can find a moment of rest. The harsh landscape shapes their bond and their choices as they drift from one petty crime to the next, always on the move and always aware that danger could be lurking just over the horizon.

Chook carries a memory that haunts him: Max sleeping beside him in bed. Kev discovers this memory and brutally beats Max, forcing them to hit the road again. Kev’s violence is driven by fear and a hard, protective insistence that Max is not to be remembered as weak or vulnerable. Chook argues softly that Max didn’t hurt him; he was merely lonely. But Kev recoils at the idea of weakness and calls Chook a “little poofdah,” revealing that Max is dead. The memory of Max is patched into their grim present as Kev drags the body out of the car and leaves him stranded in the middle of the lake flats, a stark symbol of how far they’ve fallen. When Kev returns to the car later, Chook refuses a ride and chooses to walk the rest of the way, separated from the life he once knew.

The tension between them intensifies as Chook uses a stolen cell phone to text a photo of their hiding spot to someone else. Sirens approach, and in a desperate moment, Chook admits to Kev that he was the reason they’re found. Kev’s response is practical and cold: tell the police to take him to his ex-girlfriend’s place, and then he takes the rifle, signaling a grim shift toward a last, decisive act. As Chook steps toward the police cars, the sound of a rifle breaks the tense silence, and he turns to see Kev lying on the ground, a stark, brutal culmination of their road to ruin.
