Irene Dunne plays Jane Palmer, whose reckless spending and behavior worry her guardian Billingsley (played by Eugene Pallette). He sends her to a New York clinic to seek psychiatric help, and Dr. Enright (Patric Knowles) begins to understand that Jane refuses to acknowledge that she has squandered her inheritance and that her remaining possessions are being auctioned off. The sessions are measured, patient, and aimed at uncovering the root causes rather than merely curbing the symptoms.

Enright believes they need to trace the roots of her problems, and accompanies Jane on a cross-country trip to her Arizona childhood home. Cactus Kate, Queenie Vassar, her grandmother, is leery of Jane being in need of money, while Stanley Gardner Ralph Bellamy, her childhood sweetheart, deludes himself into thinking Jane has returned home just for him. The road trip is filled with small adventures that expose Jane’s stubborn streak, her lingering attachments, and the budding tension between trust and control.

Jane begins prospecting for gold at her grandfather’s mine. Seeing her growing romantic interest in the doctor, Stanley foolishly challenges him to an old-fashioned duel of pistols until he discovers Enright is a crack shot. Cactus Kate plants precious ore so that Jane can find it, inadvertently causing a gold rush by prospectors galore, turning the landscape into a fevered scene of bets, bargains, and opportunity.

Enright has seen enough craziness, and returns home, but Jane tracks him back to New York and declares that they were meant for each other.
