Late at night after a public function in Los Angeles, Mike Rhodes, a mayoral candidate, and his wife Kelly Rhodes are attacked by a group of thugs. Mike is kidnapped, but Kelly is shot at and survives thanks to the dramatic arrival of Ruger, who fires on the assailants and disappears as suddenly as she arrived. Mike is taken to Gothic Imports, a business that doubles as a painting atelier and the front for a criminal operation run by the deranged kingpin Cavanaugh, an artist who hides his paintings from everyone.
Learning that Kelly actually saw one of his men, Cavanaugh orders his henchmen to return to her residence to finish the job, even though Kelly is under constant police protection. Kelly and her guardian are ambushed in a parking lot, and the guardian is killed. Yet the mysterious vigilante who intervened earlier remains on the kingpin’s trail, and once again, she dispatches Kelly’s tormentors. Ruger takes Kelly with her and leaves a message for Cavanaugh, signaling that she will not back down.
The upper-class Kelly begrudgingly cohabits with Ruger, despite not being impressed by Ruger’s messy trailer and rougher way of life. Simultaneously, the incumbent mayor Mayor Burrows summons veteran police lieutenant Lt. Chandler and urges him to identify both the enigmatic vigilante and the kidnappers, as suspicions about the mayor’s campaign begin to swirl. As the story unfolds, appearances are not what they seem, and trust becomes a complicated, shifting terrain that drives a tense confrontation between power, crime, and protection.
