Kokila 1977

In Kokila, a diligent medical college student, lives in a modest home in Bangalore with her father, an engineer, and her mother, who is dealing with health problems. A housemaid, Chenni, who is very close to the family, also shares the house. With Kokila’s father traveling often and her mother coping with illness, they decide to take in a paying guest. Vijayakumar, a bank executive, moves into the home as the paying guest.

Soon, the two fall in love and plan to marry with the consent of Kokila’s parents. Yet a troubling moment occurs when one night, Vijayakumar and Chenni are left alone in the house and share a forbidden moment. Kokila returns home, unaware of the incident, while Chenni carries the burden of knowledge about the betrayal. Vijayakumar continues to nurture his affection for Kokila, seemingly forgetting Chenni.

During Kokila’s absence on a college tour, she learns that Chenni is pregnant. An elder counsels that the child should not be aborted, arguing that a real man would never abandon his responsibilities. Chenni, overwhelmed by the turn of events, leaves the house. Kokila returns to find the household unsettled, with Vijayakumar and Chenni missing; her mother explains that Vijayakumar has moved out, and attempts to locate him prove futile.

Three years pass, and Kokila—now practicing as a doctor in a rural village—meets Vijayakumar again. The reunion reveals a surprising twist: Vijayakumar and Chenni have married and have a daughter named Kokila, a revelation that forces Kokila to confront the complexities of love, loyalty, and the consequences of choices made long ago, all set against the contrasting landscapes of city life and the countryside.
