A down-on-his-luck young man named Kesha shares a cramped rented apartment with a drug addict, Kondratiev, while working for his uncle, a magician-charlatan who uses people more than he helps them. When his uncle fires him and the landlady pushes for their eviction, they are left with almost no money—just the last twenty rubles. Amidst this precarious life, Kesha finds himself falling for a brave, young journalist named Alisa, though she treats him as a source of information rather than a partner. Their dynamic remains strained and unsettled as the night streets of Moscow become a backdrop for his hopes and disappointments, and Kesha realizes that his affection is not enough to win her over.

A fateful encounter with a wandering vagabond changes everything: Kesha is granted a gift—the ability to pass through walls—for the price of his last twenty rubles.
