Kusum, Hema Malini, is bound by a childhood marriage to Vrindavan. When a riot tears through the region, Kusum’s father dies and blame is unfairly cast onto Vrindavan’s father, setting off a painful chain of events. Overwhelmed by the accusation and the social strain, Vrindavan’s family rejects Kusum as their daughter-in-law. In the aftermath, Kusum, along with her brother Kunj Bihari and their mother Leela Mishra, moves to a distant village to start anew. As the years pass, Kusum clings to the belief that she remains Vrindavan’s wife and refuses to consider any other life or partner, even as the world around her changes.

On the other side of the story, Vrindavan grows into a doctor after the death of his own father, a life shaped by duty and heartbreak. Oblivious to Kusum’s lingering feelings, he enters into another marriage with Lakhi, a woman who also survived the tragedy of child marriage and the loneliness that followed. Together they have a son, Charan. Lakhi’s illness eventually takes her life, leaving Vrindavan to practice in his village and raising Charan as a single father.

Fate, however, takes an unexpected turn when Vrindavan visits a wealthy patient in Kusum’s village. Kusum recognizes him, though he cannot place her at first, remembering only a pet name from the past. As their paths cross again, a slow, careful connection begins to form. Vrindavan’s mother, Durga Khote, welcomes Kusum with warmth and openness, seeing a chance for a reunion that could honor the history they shared.

Yet old wounds simmer beneath the surface. Kusum feels that the in-laws may have forgotten the wrong done to her family and now take her for granted, which fuels a sense of bitterness and suspicion. Despite these tensions, Vrindavan maintains a gentle hope that she might come back to him, unable to completely let go of what they once had. The bond between them deepens as Kusum spends more time with Charan, the son who becomes a bridge between past hurts and a possible future.

During a difficult period marked by an endemic in Vrindavan’s village, Kusum’s care for Charan strengthens the connection between the two households. She acts with patience and protects the boy, showing a side of her that longs for family unity and shared happiness. In the end, the pair confront their egos and find a way to move forward together. With the blessings of her brother [Kunj Bihari], [Leela Mishra]’s warmth, [Durga Khote]’s support, and Charan’s innocent bond with both families, Kusum and Vrindavan choose to unite, forging a hopeful future built on forgiveness, understanding, and renewed love.
