Kamal Kishore Khosla is a middle-aged, middle-class man living in New Delhi, surrounded by a family that both cares for him and is guided by their own ambitions. His wife, Sudha, is kind and supportive, while their household includes their hot-headed elder son, Balwant ‘Bunty’ Khosla; their idealistic younger son, Chiraunji Lal “Cherry” Khosla; and their confident, outspoken daughter, Nikki Khosla. Kamal’s fear of insignificance runs deep: a nightmare about his own death makes him confront the unsettling idea that his family might not miss him if he were gone, a fear underscored by the way people around him chase money and status.
Kamal has spent years building toward a dream: he buys a plot of land in South Delhi for ₹30 lakhs and pays an additional ₹5 lakhs in commission to Vijendar. He envisions a two-storey home for the family and hopes the location will suit Cherry’s job prospects. Yet Cherry is not enthusiastic about the plan; he wants to move to New York for a job, though he keeps his intentions private. The tension deepens when Cherry talks about this with his girlfriend, Meghna Chopra, and their travel agent friend, Asif Iqbal. Meghna is upset by the idea of losing Cherry, and Asif teases Cherry about his old-fashioned name, pushing him to consider a fresh start.
Initially, Kamal clashes with Cherry over the future, but their neighbor and friend, Sahni, helps Kamal see that times have changed. Sahni also suggests Kamal share a drink with Cherry and spend real quality time together. After a long day, Cherry returns home to a family gathering that turns heated when he declares he plans to move to New York for work, a revelation that leaves Kamal unsettled.
During the Bhoomipujan ceremony for the plot, the Khoslas learn the land has been encroached upon by squatters linked to the local builder Kishan Khurana. Khurana’s power is punctured only briefly by Vijendar, who redirects Kamal to bid for the plot at a steep price. The demanded sum—around ₹15 lakhs—proves beyond Kamal’s means. Government channels yield little help; officials offer token solutions and take hefty commissions to mediate, which only deepens Kamal’s sense of helplessness. Bunty, moved by his father’s predicament, enlists a group of wrestlers to reclaim the land by force, a bold but impulsive move that backfires when the police arrest Kamal on false trespass charges. Khurana’s scheme works to secure the case, and Kamal is acquitted only to face a revised offer of ₹12 lakhs, leaving him feeling crushed and resigned.
With Kamal’s resolve dented, he urges his family to avoid further confrontations, encouraging Cherry to focus on his potential New York opportunity. But Cherry, now touched by his father’s vulnerability, commits to helping him. Meghna and Asif reveal they too were once victimized by Khurana, and Asif proposes a clever plan to outsmart him. The plan centers on orchestrating a fake land deal involving a separate plot of nine acres near the highway—the Fisheries Department land—by enlisting Bapu, Meghna’s mentor and a theatre manager, to personify the Dubai-based “M. L. Sethi,” along with Mani, another actor in Bapu’s troupe. Kamal remains wary, but Sahni persuades him to let Cherry join the ruse.
Bapu and Mani present the fake documents to Khurana and Munjal, with a staged setup that makes it look like a legitimate sale through Sethi Associates. Khurana agrees to buy for ₹1.4 crores, with ₹35 lakhs paid up front. Vijendar is kept out of the loop, and the plan hinges on everyone playing their roles while a handful of the troupe members travel to Bangalore for performances. The other actors abandon the project, leaving Bapu, Mani, Cherry, Asif, Meghna, and Kamal to improvise the ruse and keep Khurana engaged.
The con proceeds to a tense moment at Khurana’s farmhouse, where the fake deal appears to be unraveling. Yet Bapu and Mani manage to produce cash and docilely deceive Khurana, who ends up drunk and vulnerable, allowing Cherry, Asif, and the others to seize the ₹35 lakhs. The next morning, Kamal and Cherry return to Khurana and Munjal with ₹12 lakhs in hand, and Kamal regains possession of the land. Khurana is forced to retreat, and the remainder of the cash is shared among the Khoslas, Asif, and Bapu’s theatre group.
In the aftermath, Cherry decides to change his name to “Chirag” and abandons his plan to move to New York, Bunty starts his own real estate business, and Cherry and Meghna marry, settling into their newly constructed home, the “New Khosla Kunj,” on their reclaimed plot. The film closes with Khurana learning that he has been outsmarted and deciding to pretend the whole affair never happened to protect his reputation, tasting the bitter fruit of a plan that backfired and paved the way for the Khoslas’ new beginning.
