Set during the British Raj, Pandit Bhanu Shankar Shastri, Shankar Mahadevan, is a celebrated Indian classical singer who makes his home in the princely state of Vishrampur with his daughter Uma Shastri, Mrunmayee Deshpande. A memorable Miraj performance brings him face to face with another titan of classical music, Khansaheb Aftab Hussain Bareliwale, Sachin Pilgaonkar, who is invited to Vishrampur to test his mettle and possibly claim the throne of the royal singer.

On the Dasara festival, the Maharaja hosts an annual singing contest whose winner earns the title of royal singer, a Haveli (Mansion), and a legendary dagger called the Katyar. The ruler also declares a dramatic self-defense prerogative: the royal singer may use the dagger to defend himself, even in murder, if required. Shastri rises to the challenge and defeats Khansaheb in a fierce contest, a victory that Khansaheb cannot replicate for fourteen years, while he endures humiliation from his wife Nabila, Sakshi Tanwar, and from the villagers who watch his struggle with envy and resentment.

Khansaheb’s life spirals as he endures a suicide attempt, and he gradually confronts the deep-seated hatred he harbors for Bhanu Shankar Shastri. Nabila’s bitterness reaches a tipping point when she poisons Shastri, leaving him unable to sing but able to speak. In the next annual contest, Shastri declines to sing on stage, handing Khansaheb a hollow victory and forcing Khansaheb to be named the royal singer. Khansaheb then moves into the haveli with his daughter Zareena, Amruta Khanvilkar, while Shastri silently exits Vishrampur, choosing a life away from the stage.

One of Shastri’s pupils, Sadashiv, Subodh Bhave, arrives at the haveli to study music but finds no master to teach him. He meets Khansaheb, who, upon hearing Sadashiv mimic Shastri’s style, banishes him from the haveli. Undeterred, Sadashiv, with Zareena’s help, locates Uma and uncovers the truth about Shastri’s renunciation of music and Nabila’s poisoning attempt. Sadashiv’s resolve grows as he tries to confront Khansaheb, though Zareena’s intervention stops him and challenges him to prove himself in the next competition.

With Shastri’s books and Gramophone records as his guide, Sadashiv begins a rigorous journey of self-education. Eventually, Sadashiv and Uma bring Shastri back to their home, where he urges Sadashiv to learn from Khansaheb, though Khansaheb initially refuses to take him as a pupil. Undaunted, Sadashiv adopts Khansaheb’s teaching methods in disguise, until he’s caught, and the power dynamics at the haveli shift once more.

When Khansaheb challenges Sadashiv to outdo him, the younger musician finds that his own voice and technique have grown in parallel with Shastri’s legacy. Khansaheb asks the Maharaja for permission to use the Katyar in self-defense against what he perceives as a threat to his music. The Maharaja agrees, but Sadashiv requests a final performance and asks Khansaheb to accept him as a pupil if he is impressed by his singing. Sadashiv delivers a performance that blends Shastri’s influence with Khansaheb’s mastery, a moment punctuated by emotion and technical finesse.

In the end, Khansaheb forgives Sadashiv but declines to take him on as a pupil, convinced that his own past misdeeds and the weight of legacy would make such an apprenticeship too complicated. The tale closes on a nuanced note about ambition, tradition, and the price of greatness, with music as the enduring bridge between two rival masters and the new generation they leave behind.
