Vidyalakshmi (Mamta Mohandas), a scion of a wealthy Hindu aristocratic family, defies tradition by marrying Shanavas (Asif Ali), a Muslim. The couple begins their life with warmth, but the weight of family opposition and financial strain slowly grows, even as their love remains strong. They welcome a daughter, Laya (Anikha Surendran), who grows up in a small nursery within a tight-knit community surrounding them.
Things get harder when money runs tight. Shanavas does his best to keep the family afloat, but tragedy strikes on a rainy night: a group of goons, mistaking him for someone else, kill him on the way to buy mangoes for his daughter. Vidyalakshmi is left to raise Laya with courage and grit, carrying the weight of the loss.
Struggling to cope, Vidyalakshmi trims daily expenses and fights to keep a roof over their heads. Rent begins to lag, and soon she is asked to vacate the house. In a desperate bid to pay the rent, she sells her ornaments, only to have the money stolen by a thief. The situation forces her onto the streets with Laya, and they end up sleeping on the railway platform, vulnerable but determined to survive.
A turning point arrives when Preman, an auto driver with a sunny disposition and a simple sense of humor, finds them at the station. Vidyalakshmi explains her plight, and Preman offers help, guiding them to his colony. The residents rally around her, and the sense of community sparks a remarkable transformation: Vidyalakshmi, who had studied medicine before marriage, resolves to sit for the final MBBS year with the colony’s encouragement. Surrounded by supportive neighbors, she studies, perseveres, and eventually clears the exam, becoming a doctor.
With a new professional future on the horizon, Vidyalakshmi faces resistance from Shanavas’ family: his elder brother, backed by a Moulavi, demands the granddaughter be returned. Vidyalakshmi stands firm, refusing to part with Laya. Preman steps in to defend them, and with the help of a friend, Vidyalakshmi secures a job abroad in Kuwait, taking Laya with her, and promising to return soon. The decision weighs heavily on her, yet it marks a new chapter in their lives.
Meanwhile, Preman learns of a potential abroad opportunity after visiting an astrologer who hints at distant horizons. The film closes on a quiet, aching note: Preman waits at the beach for news from Vidyalakshmi, holding onto the hope of a reunion that still feels just beyond reach.
