Near a deserted fort, a shabby man, Kesu, keeps to the village’s edge, his quiet life shadowed by old wounds. A bold, mischievous boy, Gopi, comes by to tease him, but noticing the sadness in the elder’s eyes, he restrains himself and heads home.

One day, while trying to fish near the river, Gopi slips into the water. He regains consciousness on the riverbank and remembers that Kesu had saved him earlier. From that moment the two form a bond, and Gopi begins asking around about his enigmatic savior, hoping to learn more about this humble guardian.

Villagers recount Kesu’s old romance with Sudhamati. The couple’s plans collide with poverty: Sudhā’s parents oppose the match. During a boat ride, Sudha falls into the lake; Kesu saves her, but in the process her gold bangle slips away into the depths.

Determined to win her back, Kesu sells his land and travels to the city to replace the lost bangle. In the village, Sudhamati is married off to a wealthy suitor, leaving Kesu heartbroken. The once-proud man drifts around the village, almost unseen, like a beggar.

Moved by Kesu’s plight, Gopi vows to locate Sudhamati so the old man can see her again and gift the bangle. He travels to the city, finds Sudha, who initially resists leaving the city life but later travels back to the village with her husband.

Back in the village, Sudhamati and Kesu reunite, and she asks him to place the bangle in her hand. In that poignant moment, Kesu breathes his last, cradled in the arms of the woman he loved.
