Julie Lakshmi is a Christian Anglo-Indian girl whose life unfolds under the weight of India’s strict social codes, where interfaith romance and premarital pregnancy are harshly judged. She falls in love with her best friend, Shashi Bhattacharya Vikram Makandar, a Hindu Brahmin, and their bond deepens even as they navigate a world that keeps faiths apart. When Julie becomes pregnant, Shashi moves to the city for a corporate job, unaware of the storm brewing at home.
Her mother faces a devastating crisis of conscience as Julie reveals the pregnancy. The family leans toward despair, but Ruby Aunty Ruby Myers, a devout Christian, speaks up for Julie and urges against abortion. Julie is sent away to have the baby in secret, while the rest of the family tells themselves that she has taken a job in another town. After the birth, the child is left in an orphanage, and Julie returns home to find that her father, Morris Om Prakash, has died. With the patriarch gone, Julie becomes the primary breadwinner for the family, wrestling with new responsibilities and the ache of the life she left behind.
Weeks later, a chance encounter with Shashi leads to a full revelation of everything that happened. He asks to marry Julie, but his mother, Mrs. Devki Bhattacharya Achala Sachdev, harshly objects, blaming Julie for seducing her son and bringing a child into their faith. Julie’s mother Nadira also recoils at the idea of an inter-faith marriage and expresses a longing to return to England. Yet the turning point arrives when Shashi’s father, Mr. Bhattacharya Utpal Dutt, confronts the prejudice on both sides and urges them to put their grandchild first.
In the end, a tentative harmony begins to take shape as the two families extend their blessings to the couple. The film closes on a note of quiet resolve and renewed family ties, with a promise that motherhood and lineage will be recognized and protected. Julie’s mother speaks softly of the grandson’s rightful place, a vow that carries the weight of reconciliation through generations:
never leave him
