In 1845, trader Oliver Hale, John Russell, and his new wife Garnet Hale, Joan Leslie, are returning from New York to California. In a New Orleans music hall they meet and befriend Florinda Grove, Vera Ralston, a dance hall singer who is secretly on the run from the New York police, claiming she’s innocent of a murder. The Hales believe her story and help her slip away in disguise as a widow bound for St. Louis on a riverboat. The trio then travels north to reach New Mexico, planning to join a wagon train headed for California.

Back in Santa Fe, Oliver is away on a short business trip when a messenger from his brother Charles Hale, Ray Middleton, arrives with a letter. The note explains that Carmelita Velasco, daughter of a wealthy landowner, claims to be pregnant by Oliver and that she and her family expect him to do the honorable thing and marry her. But Oliver is already married to Garnet, and refusing Carmelita could offend the Velasco family.
