Two RAF aircrew cadets, David Wilton and John Aynesworth, forge a friendship that hints at a deeper rivalry as they push through pilot training. A friendly bet forms over who will prove to be the superior pilot, setting the tone for their future choices and challenges. After passing their initial training, they are sent to the British Flying Training School at Falcon Field in Mesa, Arizona, for more advanced instruction, where the differences in their natural talents begin to show more clearly.

In the dry high skies of the American desert, Wilton struggles with the fundamentals of landing, a skill that Aynesworth handles with ease. The gulf between them widens: Aynesworth emerges as the more instinctive flyer, while Wilton grapples with confidence and technique. The disappointment of not living up to his own hopes is keen, and it leads to a pivotal shift—Wilton is sent to Canada to train as a navigator, a move that will redefine his path and test his resolve.
