Journey from Zanskar 2011

In the majestic Himalayas, a small Tibetan Buddhist community has thrived for millennia, largely insulated from the changes affecting nearby regions. The upcoming construction of a road that will link Padum to Leh poses a formidable challenge, set to bring the forces of modernity straight to Zanskar within just a few years. A journey that once took two days by car will be condensed into mere hours, threatening to unravel the very fabric of this singular society. The question looms: can the native language, customs, and spiritual practices that have enriched Zanskar for centuries withstand the pressure of globalization?

In a heartfelt effort to maintain this cultural legacy, the Dalai Lama has entrusted two revered monks from Stongde Monastery with a crucial mission: to preserve their traditions with dignity. In pursuit of this goal, they are embarking on the creation of a school aimed at educating local children in their own language, rich history, and sacred spiritual practices. This initiative is a vital response to the inadequate offerings of the government school and the unaffordable costs of private institutions.

As the countdown progresses, the monks find themselves pressed for time as they strive to complete the school. Meanwhile, they must facilitate the relocation of younger students to alternative educational facilities in Manali and beyond. This daunting task entails challenging journeys across 17,500-foot mountain passes, tackled by foot, on horseback, or guided by resilient yaks—whatever means necessary to guarantee the preservation of this invaluable cultural heritage.
