Stan and Ollie are musicians traveling across the United States as “The Original Zoot Suit Band.” Their journey takes an odd turn when they meet Chester Wright, who claims to possess a revolutionary pill that can turn water into fuel. In truth, Chester is a swindler who slyly swaps water canisters with gasoline, slipping the fake fuel past the musicians’ notice. This setup leads the three of them into a scheme meant to capitalize on Stan and Ollie’s musical appeal to attract a large crowd and push the fraudulent invention.

The plan initially hits a profitable groove, drawing in crowds and turning a simple performance into a vehicle for deception. Yet the façade quickly unravels when one customer suffers a terrible accident attributed to the pill’s failure. The danger intensifies as Chester, trying to dodge blame and consequences, masks his own threat with a bold lie—posing as a police officer to pretend arrest the duo and diffuse anger from those who feel cheated.

Into this tense mix steps Susan, a choir singer who knows the trio and seeks their help to recover funds swindled from her mother. With a blend of guile and ambition, they craft disguises and aliases to insert themselves into a hotel where the conmen behind the scam are staying. Ollie plays up an ostentatious display of wealth to entice the gang’s leader, Corcoran, while Stan unexpectedly slips into a feminine disguise, adding a layer of comic confusion to their operation.

As the plan tightens, they pivot toward a new scheme centered on Susan’s employment at Bennett’s club. The aim is to retrieve the remaining stolen funds, and the ruse escalates with more double-crosses and calculated moves. The trio succeeds in seizing Bennett’s funds, but their deception is ultimately uncovered, and they are captured by the very gang they sought to outwit. Trapped aboard Bennett’s vessel, they stage a bold escape that shifts the momentum in their favor, leading to the gang’s eventual capture by the authorities.

In a final turn of conscience, Chester steps forward to redeem himself by showing a genuine intent to return the money to Susan’s mother. With the threat of retribution gone, Stan and Ollie bid a farewell to Susan and Chester and make a quick exit to outrun the remaining gangsters, choosing a swift, quiet departure over confrontation.
