James' Journey to Jerusalem 2004

As James (Siyabonga Melongisi Shibe), a young African teenager, embarks on a sacred journey to the Holy Land, his genuine intentions are tragically misunderstood by the Israeli authorities. Labeled an illegal foreign worker, James finds himself in custody, only to gain his freedom due to the intervention of Shimi (Salim Daw), a cunning contractor who seeks to exploit James’ unfortunate situation.

Once released, James is compelled to work for Shimi, becoming inadvertently caught in a tangled web of manipulation and deceit. As he maneuvers through this dangerous environment, James becomes increasingly aware that Shimi’s wife views him merely as a source of entertainment, a diversion from their otherwise dull existence.

Simultaneously, Shimi’s father, Salah, recognizes James’ remarkable luck with dice and capitalizes on it, ensuring his dominance in backgammon among his peers. In a world where his luck is both a blessing and a burden, James’ initial goal of settling his debt to Shimi while ultimately reaching Jerusalem begins to dissolve, overshadowed by his growing adaptation to the local culture. Salah’s incessant advice to “Don’t be a frayer” (sucker) strikes a chord with James, encouraging him to navigate the murky waters of labor exploitation with newfound savvy.

As James further immerses himself in the realm of cheap labor contracting, he begins to enjoy material comforts such as stylish clothing, a mobile phone, and even a television. Yet, each step towards this newfound wealth pulls him further away from his original intent of pilgrimage, causing that noble goal to gradually fade into obscurity.

His perspective begins to shift dramatically when James is apprehended by immigration police and transferred to an Israeli prison in the Russian Compound of Jerusalem. Within the stark walls of the prison, he finally catches a glimpse of the city that has been the object of his village’s prayers. This poignant moment starkly contrasts with his current situation, prompting a profound reflection on the true purpose of his journey—a purpose that now feels lost amid the turbulence of his personal struggles.
