Ivan Tsarevich & the Grey Wolf 3 2016

In a distant kingdom, the aging Tsar [Ivan Okhlobystin] marks a grand 150th birthday and decides it’s time to retire from the hum of state affairs, seeking quiet among the country’s wilds. He leaves the realm in the capable hands of his son, the Tsarevich [Nikita Efremov], and his steadfast ally, the Gray Wolf [Artur Smolyaninov], who together with the Scholar Cat [Mikhail Boyarskiy] and the living scarecrow Pal Palych [Mikhail Khrustalev] set off on a voyage aboard a magical flying carpet. On the road, they briefly abandon an ordinary scarecrow, which suddenly breathes with life, and where that figure once stood, a mysterious fountain of hypnotic crimson jam appears, pulsing with strange power.

Their caravan of travelers encounters leaders from distant lands who are eager to invest in this strange jam, and a summit is arranged to discuss its potential. The journey back home reveals a kingdom transformed by the jam’s influence: people work at impossible speeds, building things beyond natural pace, all under the spell of the crimson sweetness. Pal Palych quickly ingratiates himself with Vasilisa, winning her favor as the world around them tilts toward an unseen ambition.

That night, the Gray Wolf overhears Pal’s dark plan but finds himself trapped in a chimney, a setback that foreshadows the danger ahead. Pal deploys dark magic to steal the Tsarevich’s body, leaving the real Ivan’s soul trapped inside Vasilisa’s toy monkey. The Gray Wolf manages a narrow escape and tries to warn the rightful heir, but Pal’s traps keep them apart. Vasilisa grows attracted to this new, restored version of Ivan, while the real Tsarevich struggles to reach her with his true self.

A captive Gray Wolf eventually reveals the truth to Ivan, and help comes from the tsar’s side when Nightingale-Bandit [Anatoli Petrov] speaks in riddles that unmask Pal’s origin. The tale unfolds as tattoos on the back of Pal’s ally, Kesha, tell the true story: Pal was a scarecrow conjured by a demonic ritual who seized the kingdom through a mind-controlling jam. Power corrupts him, but in his hubris he forgets to grant the people their daily dose, provoking rebellion that ends with Pal’s destruction and scattering his parts in the swamp—an act that Ivan later reassembles. The tsar finally reveals that most of the kingdom’s wonders were hallucinatory products of the jam, and that an antidote exists.

At the summit, the tsar and Gray Wolf disguise themselves as world leaders, while Nightingale-Bandit and the mystery behind Kesha work to connect the jam’s fountain to the antidote. Ivan is separated from the others and uncovers Pal’s hidden underground chamber, where a scarecrow army lies in wait. Returning to the surface, the world leaders drink the antidote, and Pal’s true colors are exposed as he unleashes the army to seize control. The only reliable solution is to destroy Pal’s staff—the relic that houses his corrupted body. Ivan and Gray Wolf seize it, yet Pal lunges with brutal force, nearly breaking the Gray Wolf’s jaw. In a final act of courage, Vasilisa shatters the staff, killing Pal and dispersing the scarecrow army. With the staff’s destruction, Ivan’s soul is finally returned to his body, and the kingdom begins to awaken from the jam-induced illusion.

This tale blends wonder, danger, and redemption, showing how loyalty, love, and a careful skepticism of easy miracles can restore a realm and a family that were nearly lost to a hypnotic, crimson sweetness.
