In a remote national forest, five archaeology students uncover a cave tied to an ancient Native American legend. They blast entry to gain access and uncover prehistoric drawings and scattered bones across the cave floor. From the shadows, a fearsome creature emerges and brutally slaughters them all, leaving the forest quiet and ominous behind.

Two months later, at a ranger station tower in the same forest, Danny St. Claire [Cerina Vincent] is a ranger who drinks to drown her guilt for a car crash that killed her best friend Julie Cassidy [Miranda Frigon]. Her superior, Rick Bailey [Greg Kean], assigns her to stay at the station alone for a few days and orders her to drain water to relieve the pressure on Devil’s Gate Dam, where cracks have been spotted. That night, haunted by memories of the accident, she hears unfamiliar sounds outside. Investigating, she finds claw marks on the tool shed door, a chilling sign that the danger is closer than she admits.

The following morning, her colleague and boyfriend Justin Rawley [Dominic Zamprogna] arrives to keep her company. After inspecting the dam, they return to the station for a quiet dinner. Danny confesses that she was the driver in the crash and let the police believe Julie was at the wheel, and Justin offers comforting words as they share a moment of intimacy. Their budding calm is shattered when an emergency siren rips through the night: someone has sabotaged the satellite dish, Justin’s jeep, and the radio, signaling that something dangerous is at work.

On the way to the dam to use its radio, they encounter campers Carl Nash [Fred Henderson] and Evelyn Nash [Chilton Crane], who dismiss Justin’s warnings and wander off on their own. Later, the radio room at the dam is found trashed. Returning to the station, Danny discovers Evelyn’s corpse hanging from a chain inside the building and Carl’s body dumped onto the roof. Justin volunteers to seek help, but the creature ambushes him and kills him in a vicious assault, cutting short their rescue attempt.

The next morning, Danny discovers Justin’s severed head in the tool shed and his bloody body sprawled on the roof. She buries him and arms herself, preparing to face the escalating danger. That night, the creature strikes the station again, and Danny manages to wound it with gunfire, buying a fragile moment of safety.

The following morning, Danny tracks the creature’s blood trail to a nearby cave and encounters the teacher of the students who were killed. He explains that the creature is a demon drawn to Danny’s negative energy—her guilt over Julie’s death intensifies the nightmare she faces. Back at the station, Danny finds the Nashes’ corpses exhumed and arranged around a table, with Justin’s head displayed on a plate. She sets out to hunt the demon but is wounded in the leg, making every move a test of resolve. She locates the Nashes’ cellphone and calls Rick Bailey [Greg Kean], begging him to bring a SWAT team, only to be dismissed as drunken rambling.

The next day, Rick arrives at the station alone and heads with Danny toward the cave. Along the way, they discover the teacher’s body impaled on a pole. The creature swoops by, dropping Justin’s body onto Rick and crushing him. Danny speeds toward the cave with the creature in close pursuit. The demon lands on the hood of her vehicle as she drives straight into the cave, where she uses dynamite to seal the chamber and trap the creature inside. Exhausted, she returns to the station, places her ranger badge on the desk, and walks away, a heavy silence marking her victory and cost.

Sometime later, Danny speaks to a policeman about the killings but says she doesn’t know who did it. In a final act of honesty, she confesses to being the driver in the crash that killed Julie, accepting responsibility for her friend’s death and the burden that still lingers over the forest. The mountains hold their breath as the danger is contained, but the memory of the events lingers in Danny’s thoughts, a stark reminder of guilt, courage, and the price of protection.
