It Came From the Desert follows a geologist who arrives in the remote town of Lizard Breath, California, on June 1, 1951, to study the site of a meteor crash deep in the desert southwest. What begins as a scientific mission quickly turns into a race against a growing threat when he discovers that the meteor’s radiation has mutated a local ant population, enlarging them to monstrous proportions. Despite the alarming findings, many locals remain skeptical, and the danger is easy to overlook in the early stages. Yet the clock is already ticking, and the threat only grows louder as the ants multiply and begin to terrorize the surrounding area.

To stand a chance, the player must venture across a web of locations—from dusty mines and sprawling farms to a dimly lit pub, an airfield, and a small-town radio station—searching for evidence of the ants’ advance. Each stop offers clues, opportunities to gather support, and chances to convince wary townsfolk and decisionmakers that something must be done before it’s too late. Along the way, the player must manage scarce resources, build alliances, and contain the infestation before it spreads beyond control.

The core of the experience is a real-time crisis where every decision matters. Waiting, sleeping (in homes or hospitals), and driving consume precious in-game time, and the player is afforded a hard limit of 15 days, with June 15 as the final cut-off. If the mission fails to halt the swarm by then, the ants spread unchecked, leading to a grim, gloomy outcome. A successful run hinges on locating the central colony and, most crucially, killing the queen to halt the invasion at its source.

To prevail, the player must marshal every available resource, from everyday workers to the heavy firepower of the National Guard—tanks and fighter jets included—and push the fight to the heart of the threat. The experience rewards careful planning, decisive action, and the willingness to balance scientific inquiry with rugged, on-the-ground response. Throughout, the atmosphere remains tense and methodical, emphasizing that survival hinges on smart choices under pressure, as the ant menace looms larger with every passing day.
