Gopinath Gemini Ganesan falls in love with Janaki Sowcar Janaki and they marry in Kasi. The marriage is not accepted by Gopinath’s mother, C. K. Saraswathi, and the couple is driven apart. Janaki is pregnant, and her father, V. S. Raghavan, realising that no man will marry Janaki a second time, decides to help her secure a post as a collector.

Gopinath meanwhile has moved to South India, where he later marries Jaya Jayanthi by concealing his first marriage. They build a quiet, if unconventional, life together and are blessed with three children, living under the watchful eye of Jaya’s father, S. V. Sahasranamam. Gopinath works as a clerk in the collector’s office, trying to balance personal choices with public duties.

A new collector arrives at the office, and it turns out to be Janaki. The two former spouses must navigate working side by side, and harmony is strained when a junior employee in Janaki’s office, Babu Nagesh, spreads a harmful rumour that Janaki and Gopinath are having an affair. The unfounded gossip reaches Jaya and disturbs her deeply. Jaya confronts the implication of the rumor and begins to suspect the truth about Gopinath’s past.

Meanwhile, tragedy strikes when the sons of Janaki and Jaya, Ramu and Prabhakar, drown and are rushed to hospital. The family is forced to confront a painful mix of guilt, loyalty, and new loyalties as Jaya navigates the emotional turmoil. In a difficult but poignant turn, Jaya learns to accept Janaki as her sister, even as the scandal tests their bonds. Yet the fallout continues: Ramu dies in hospital, while Prabhakar survives. In a surprising act of generosity and forgiveness, Jaya gives Janaki her own son as a gift, a gesture that reshapes their fragile relationships.

With the family strained but intact, Janaki and Prabhakar set off abroad to fulfill Janaki’s new duty, leaving behind a tangle of secrets, resilience, and the enduring question of what family means when lives are bound by duty, tradition, and unintended consequences.
